Shinjuku Golden Gai

Shinjuku Golden Gai is a unique and historic district located in Kabukichō. Comprising a network of six narrow alleys, it is home to over 200 small shanty-style bars, clubs, and eateries, tightly packed into the area. The alleys are private roads, and photography and videography on the streets require permission from the area's business promotion association.

Situated a short walk from Shinjuku Station's East Exit, between the Shinjuku City Office and Hanazono Shrine, Golden Gai offers a glimpse into Tokyo's past when the city featured narrow lanes and tiny two-story buildings. While the surrounding areas have undergone significant redevelopment, Golden Gai remains as one of the few examples of Tokyo's pre-"economic miracle" era from the latter half of the 20th century.

The buildings in Golden Gai are quite small, some just a few feet wide, with narrow alleys separating them closely. Most structures consist of a small bar on the ground floor and either another bar or a tiny flat upstairs. The area has a scruffy and run-down appearance, with dimly lit alleys. Despite its appearance, Golden Gai attracts a more affluent clientele and is known for being a meeting place for musicians, artists, writers, academics, actors, and celebrities.

The bars in Golden Gai often have unique themes, such as jazz, R&B, karaoke, punk rock, flamenco, and more. Many feature walls adorned with movie, film, and concert posters. Some bars only cater to regular customers introduced by existing patrons, while others welcome non-regulars and even make efforts to attract overseas tourists by providing English signage. The bars usually open late in the evening, making the area quiet during the day and early evening.
