Toyama Prefectural Hall

Toyama Prefectural Hall is a cultural and meeting venue owned by Toyama Prefecture in the center of Toyama city. It opened on 2 August 1964 and is run by the Toyama Culture Foundation.

The building

Nikken Sekkei designed the building, which has eight floors above ground and one below, with about 18,000 m² of floor space. Earthquake strengthening work in 2014 and 2015 brought in wood, traditional crafts and products of local industry from Toyama Prefecture. They are used inside the building and on the hall's outer wall, the canopy over the main entrance and the walkway beside it.

Facilities

The hall, used for plays, concerts and kabuki, has its own wing with rehearsal rooms. The main building holds an exhibition room in the basement, an art museum on the first floor and galleries on the second and third floors. Meeting rooms fill the third to seventh floors, and the fifth floor also has a tea room and a room for Japanese dance.

A restaurant and banquet hall on the eighth floor serve dishes made mainly from Toyama produce, on tableware from local crafts such as Etchu Seto ware. On the first floor, D&DEPARTMENT TOYAMA faces the Matsukawa river with a shop for local crafts and long-selling everyday goods, a dining space and a gallery of Toyama design.
