Saidai-ji Eyo Festival
会陽裸祭り
At this over 500-year-old Okayama festival, men in loincloths compete for a wooden stick, with the victor becoming the 'Lucky Man' and receiving believed year-long blessings.

The Saidaiji Eyo Festival, famously known as one of the most extraordinary festivals worldwide, is often referred to as the “Hadaka Matsuri” or “Naked Festival”. This festival is designated as an Okayama Prefectural important intangible cultural property. During the Saidaiji Eyo Festival, numerous men don Mawashi (loincloths worn by sumo wrestlers) as they eagerly compete for possession of a wooden stick known as the "Shingi" or "God's stick”. The fortunate victor of the Shingi earns the prestigious title of “Fukuotoko” or “Lucky Man” and is believed to receive blessings of great health and fortune for the entire year. This enduring tradition has persevered for over 500 years, making it a lifelong dream for local men to become a Fukuotoko - a pinnacle honour of the year.
The breathtaking festival is accompanied by the Saidaiji Eyo Drumming group, comprising women who cannot participate in the Shingi competition. Their purpose is to uplift the spirits of the male participants and wish for their safety.
To participate in the Shingi competition in the event, advanced registration is mandatory.
