The Yokoyama Art Museum is a museum of Japanese export ceramics in Nagoya. It opened in October 2017 and is run by a public interest foundation of the same name. Its collection of more than 5,000 pieces is mostly ceramics made for sale abroad in the Meiji and Taisho eras, which later came back to Japan.
The collection
The pieces fall into 18 groups, among them Kyo, Kutani, Arita, Seto, Satsuma and Mino wares, cloisonne and Old Noritake. The museum's strengths are export ceramics made in and around Nagoya, Old Noritake, which it describes as the first Western-style ceramics made in Japan, and Sumida ware (隅田焼). Special exhibitions drawn from the collection run alongside the permanent displays.
Nagoya and export ceramics
Eastern Nagoya, where the museum stands, once had many ceramics works, close to the production areas of Seto and Mino. Overglaze painting workshops there developed a rich, showy style of decoration known as Nagoya etsuke (名古屋絵付), which was popular abroad. Nippon Toki, the company now called Noritake, and other makers of Western tableware were founded in the city.
