The design of the center was conceived by Fumihiko Maki. The name "Makuhari" refers to the surrounding area, while "Messe" is a German term denoting "trade fair."

The facility officially opened its doors on October 9, 1989. It serves as a prominent venue for a variety of high-technology events and exhibitions. Its strategic location is conveniently accessible via Tokyo's commuter rail system, providing ease of access for visitors.

Throughout the year, Makuhari Messe hosts several significant events, including:

Tokyo Auto Salon: An annual event in January that showcases modified cars and automotive innovations.

Tokyo Motor Show: A biennial event in October that highlights the latest developments in the automotive industry.

Tokyo Game Show: An annual event in September that serves as an exhibition for video game hardware and software.

Jump Festa: A yearly exposition in December dedicated to manga, anime, and video games.

Wonder Festival: A biannual event in February and July focusing on toys, scale figures, and garage kits.

Additionally, Makuhari Messe played a significant role during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, serving as the venue for various sporting events.

Overall, Makuhari Messe is a pivotal hub for hosting diverse events, ranging from automotive and technology exhibitions to entertainment and cultural expos. Its central location, accessibility, and expansive facilities have solidified its position as a key venue for national and international gatherings.
