Nagoya Castle
- Nagoyajō Station
- Walk 4 minutes
Nagoya Castle was constructed by the Owari Domain in 1612 during the Edo era and was built on the site of a previous castle from the Sengoku period. It was the center of Nagoya-juku, a key post station on the Minoji road that connected two major routes in Edo: the Tōkaidō and the Nakasendō. After ownership was transferred to the city of Nagoya in 1930, it became the heart of the modern city. Unfortunately, Nagoya Castle was destroyed during the bombing of Nagoya in WWII, but its reconstruction and repair has been ongoing since 1957. It is now considered one of Japan's most important castles and is designated a National Historic Site and National Treasure.
